For Q1 2023, I’m focusing my credit card rewards across 6 credit cards with a focus on cash back rewards:

1. Chase Freedom Flex Card: I’m using this cash back credit card to earn 3% - 5% in THREE categories: grocery stores (5%), Target (5%), and Dining at restaurants (3%). The Chase Freedom calendar also includes 5% on Fitness Clubs & Gym Memberships, but I’ll be using my Amex Platinum Card for that (see why below) as well as the U.S. Bank Cash Plus card (5% year round). Note: The Chase Freedom Flex issues cash back in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

2. Amex Blue Business Plus Card: I’m using this Amex business credit card at my catch-all credit card (i.e. for all my non-bonus / non-category spend that would normally earn 1X - 1.5X on other credit cards) because it earns 2X on all purchases, up to $50K spend per year. I’m also adding recurring expenses to it so all my auto-bill charges will be on ONE credit card.

3. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card: I’m using this Amex credit card for the $25/mo. dining credit (up to $300/yr.), which is a new benefit that replaced the old $300 Marriott Bonvoy credit. This hotel credit card provides me with massive value as it allows me to maintain Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status, offers 25 Elite Night Credits, issues a Marriott Free Night certificate worth up to 85,000 points, and more!

4. Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card: This is going to be my best credit card for gas purchases this quarter. It earns 8X at gas stations, and if you value Wyndham points around 1¢ each, then that’s an 8% return on gas spend! This hotel credit card also issues 15,000 points each account anniversary, provides automatic Wyndham Diamond status, and more.

5. American Express Platinum Card for Schwab (Amex Schwab Platinum Card): This is my best credit card for lounge access, and I’ve been using it at Oakland airport at the Escape Lounge there. I’m also an Equinox member, so now that the Amex Platinum $300 Equinox credit has been expanded to include ALL membership types (I have a single-club membership) and is also issued annually instead of $25/mo., I’m going to give it a try this year! Note: I also use this card to redeem Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back into my Schwab account at 1.1¢ per point. This is THE Amex card that makes an Amex Trifecta setup worth it for cash back. All the Amex points earned across other cards (the regular Amex Platinum Card, the Amex Gold Card, the Amex Green Card and others that earn Amex Membership Rewards points) can ALL be redeemed via the Schwab Platinum Card at the elevated rate.

6. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card: This card doesn’t get carried around, rather, I’ll be leaving it as my default payment method in my Amazon account to earn 5% back.
