-thought: hypoglycemia developed during endurance exercise
-people encouraged not to drink water during marathon
-had examples of racers who benefited
by taking carbs mid-race
"I thought muscle glycogen depletion
causes fatigue during exercise"
-wrote book: Law of Running, which
promoted carbs, carbs, carbs
last edition 2002

2010: learned about low carb eating...
-within 4 months dropped lots of weight, running improving
"So, the main doctor promoting high carb, now was low carb"
-wrote some articles and immediately lost all funding
-had to retire from university
due to promoting 'dangerous diet'
Had to go to court to face lawsuit for
claiming diet could reverse T2D
-fought case for 4 years
-during this time reversed own T2D
2018 won the case
"I learned whole body nutrition"

With Philip Prince, did study of 5k runs, 2 groups:
-low fat v low carb
-showed that at 85% of VO2max,
switched from burning carb to burning fat
Next: 1k race
result: no difference between groups
"People will say: of course, due to
their glycogen in short distances"

Let's do 6 times 800m sprints
-measured oxygen consumption & metabolism
Result:
NO DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE bet low carb & low fat
"What should have happened, according
to establishment protocol:
after 3 sprints , low carb group
performance should have gone down
due to no muscle glycogen left"
-that did not happen
-both groups performed the SAME

Real learning from this study:
-after each race: measured oxygen & RQ [respiratory quotient]
-to measure carb & fat oxidation
"The more sprints they did, the higher fat oxidation went up!"
-VO2 max ws 86%
-but, text books say: at 85% VO2 max
will burn no fat
