Are the Analogue Pocket Limited Editions Just a Money Grab?!?

When it comes to making some of the most sought after and high demand video game systems, few companies pump up demand like Analogue. Part of the reason for the demand is the fact that they do have a quality product. They also inflate demand by not nearly manufacturing enough of a certain system. Well, they are at it again and just announced color variants of the Analogue Pocket. It leaves us scratching our head and wondering is this just a money grab?

A little bit about the Analogue Pocket and what it is. Basically what it is can be described as a Game Boy-sized handheld video game system that plays a multitude of cartridges from different platforms. Out of the box it will play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and you can get additional adapters to play systems like the Sega Game Gear, Atari Lynx, and TurboExpress/TurboGrafx 16 games.

So while this seems good on the surface the issue is they have not been able to meet the demand for their two core black or white Analogue Pocket systems. And here they make the situation worse by announcing they are going to be offering an extremely limited number of color variants in transparent cases. It makes me wonder why not just produce these to fit and fill the existing demand? Why alienate your existing customer base by not delivering products they've already ordered yet delivering products that nobody seemed to ask for? All while charging a $30 premium?

I think the market is starting to turn a little bit on Analogue. Part of the reason I say that is you can still order an Analogue Duo which plays the TurboGrafx, PC Engine, Core Grafx, and the corosponding CD games. This is about to start shipping and you can still order one. Yes, those are niche systems, but Analogue also increased the price and fudged some of the features.

What do you think of this? Do you own a analog system? Share your feelings in the comments.
