Based on the 1915 novel Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham, the film is widely considered by critics to be what made Bette Davis a star. Life magazine wrote that Davis's Mildred Rogers was perhaps "the best performance by an American actress committed to film." When the work was not nominated for an Oscar, actress Norma Shearer began a campaign for its nomination. Under pressure, the academy changed the rules for the year's voting, allowing names not present on the ballots to receive votes.
