The Kremlin continues to be under great pressure in the Ukraine-Russia war that started with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Many people of military service age in Russia are forced to flee their country in order not to die on Ukrainian soil. Since the start of the war, 3,500 Russian men of military age have sought asylum in Germany. However, only 90 of them have been granted refugee status.
The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has granted refugee status to only 90 people. The remaining applications were reportedly handled by another EU member state in accordance with the Dublin Regulation. The German authorities continuously monitor and analyse the situation in the countries of origin of the migrants. The last review of the situation in Russia was carried out this month.
According to the results of the review, fleeing persons can continue to receive international protection. Persons of military age who refuse to serve in the army can receive international protection if the conditions are favourable.
German Left Party MP Clara Bünger criticised the approval of so few applications. The ruling coalition emphasises human rights but fails to enforce them, she said.
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makieiev, criticised German politicians who support the request of Russian citizens for asylum in Germany. Makieiev had made this criticism after Russian President Vladimir Putin had called for asylum to be granted to Russians who fled their country following the declaration of mobilisation.
