The series originated with Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample (ad agency for General Mills). They wanted a cheaper way than television to reach a young audience. Himan Brown, producer-director of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, wanted to introduce new audiences to an audio dramatic form. Tom Bosley was chosen as the host because of his television recognition from Happy Days. CBS produced 52 original broadcasts as General Mills Radio Theater, then continued for the next 52 as the CBS Radio Adventure Theater.
