1. **Foundation of the Order:** The Order of Mercy, also known as the Royal, Celestial and Military Order of Our Lady of the Mercies and the Redemption of the Captives, was founded to ransom Christians held captive by Muslims. It was founded in the early 13th century.

2. **St. Peter Nolasco:** St. Peter Nolasco (1189-1256) was the first General Grand Master of the Order. When his coffin was opened, he was found armed with his armor and sword.

3. **Vision of Our Lady:** On August 1, 1218, St. Peter Nolasco received a vision of Our Lady who told him to found his Order. She held two bags of coins to be used in ransoming Christians in captivity.

4. **Order's Title:** The Order was titled the Order of Our Lady of Mercy for the Redemption of the Captives.

5. **Role of Knights and Clerics:** The Order had more knights than clerics at its foundation. Clerics primarily prayed the Divine Office, while knights guarded the coasts and were dedicated to the redemption of Christian prisoners.

6. **Equilibrium between Prayer and Action:** The religious in the Order dedicated themselves to prayer, especially for the knights, while the knights engaged in the dangerous mission of freeing Christian captives. This balance between prayer and action was considered beautiful.

7. **Armor and Sword:** St. Peter Nolasco, a lay warrior, was the first General Superior of the Order. He was buried in his armor and sword, demonstrating his commitment to the mission.

8. **Compassion for Captive Christians:** The Order was founded out of compassion for Catholic prisoners enslaved by the Moors in Spain. These prisoners were exposed to the loss of faith, subjected to bad treatments, and often forced into immoral activities.

9. **Apparitions of Our Lady:** Our Lady appeared to King James of Aragon, St. Raymond of Peñaforte, and St. Peter Nolasco, asking all three to start a religious order dedicated to the liberation of captives. They each had the same vision of Our Lady.

10. **The Smile of Our Lady:** Our Lady's smile symbolized her liberality and willingness to grant graces to those in need. The devotion to Our Lady of Mercy encourages a filial and confidence-filled relationship with her, characterized by trust in her smiling mercy.

The original title of the Order in Spanish refers to Nuestra Señora de las Merceds, a merced is a favor someone does for another, it is a gift someone gives to someone else. The gift that she was promising those prisoners was freedom from their terrible captivity.

The Church lacks invocations enough to inculcate in us the idea of this liberality of Our Lady. She is always disposed to give us excellent graces, to invite us to ask for them, and to love her for the goodness she shows us.

May this invocation open our souls to this type of filial and confidence-filled relationship with Our Lady that those warriors considered essential for their mission.

Our Lady of Mercy, pray for us!
