How a Man Dragging a 25-foot Tree Became the TALK OF THE TOWN
The streets of Seattle are always a theater of the absurd, but when a man starts sawing down a 25-foot tree in a public park, you know the Emerald City's going full "Lord of the Rings." In a place where city officials are infamous for their "stern talks" and lenient approach, this latest episode takes the cake. The man, seemingly unhinged and wielding a handsaw, proceeded to cut down the sizable tree and then parade it through the Ballard neighborhood. It might be surprising, but residents and officials alike claim to know the guy. Apparently, he's going through some "hard times" and needs "help with housing and counseling." Stern talks are planned, but let's not fool ourselves: this is just another day in Seattle.
Remember when city parks were quaint places where people actually went for leisure, to breathe in some fresh air? It appears that Ballard Commons, once a sanctuary of sorts, is now a playground for individuals who believe trees are better used as parade floats than as, well, trees. Council member Dan Strauss, representing the Ballard area, assures that "consequences" are pending. Yet, we've seen this song and dance before. Stern talks happen, but nothing changes. It's the classic one step forward, three steps back. Why is Seattle putting up with this bizarre behavior? The authorities' passive approach to mental instability and vandalism makes one ponder: what's next?
