"Hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6 or FSA) is a hazardous and corrosive byproduct of the production of hydrogen fluoride (HF) and phosphate-containing fertilizers. Large amounts of this industrial waste are produced every year, approximately more than 2 million tons. (1) In the synthetic process of HF, FSA is obtained as a result of the reaction between HF and the inevitable impurities of silica contained in the acid grade fluorspar (CaF2) used as feedstock: in fact, SiO2 is one of the major impurities in acid grade fluorspar with a content ranging from 0.5 to 1.5% w/w.
