As a young lifter what really helped me add lots of muscle mass to my frame was by mastering the body-weight movements: dips and pull ups. By progressively overloading those movements and adding weight to them I was able to really build the foundations of my physique. When you first start training you really don't even need to go to the gym, start off in your bedroom mastering the body-weight exercises.
