Footage of the moments before an alleged gunman shot dead a custody sergeant at “close range” has been released by Scotland Yard.

Louis De Zoysa, 25, is said to have smuggled a loaded antique revolver in a holster into Croydon police station, south London, on September 25, 2020 before shooting Sergeant Matthew Ratana, 54.

Northampton crown court has been told four shots were fired, with two hitting Ratana, who died from a chest wound.

De Zoysa, of Banstead, Surrey, was wounded in the neck, causing brain damage. He has been charged with Ratana’s murder, which he denies.

Jurors watched the footage for 80 minutes. Scotland Yard released an edited eight-minute version yesterday. The footage, a combination of CCTV and body-worn video, showed De Zoysa being arrested and taken to the police station in a van before being put in a cell.

Imran Khan KC, for the defence, has said his client accepts he fired the gun but he is “not guilty of murder” because he was suffering from an abnormality of mental function.

The case continues.
