Does seizure or stroke best explain Sen. Mitch McConnell’s recent "freezing" episodes in front of cameras? Doctors have made the case for both possible causes, and presented alternative explanations.
However, the Capitol physician has said there is no evidence of seizure or stroke, but the concussion Mr. McConnell suffered in March may have influenced his "freezing up." He also said that dehydration may have been a factor.
Which explanation is most likely, and what could follow if a seizure or a stroke has occurred?
On VitalSigns, Dr. Alejandro F. Centurion joins host Brendon Fallon to lend his expertise in brain disorder to these questions. Dr. Centurion is a board-certified neurologist who has practiced medicine for 25 years.
“The most concerning [explanation] would be a TIA, which is a mini-stroke and … this carries about a 10 percent risk of having another event or stroke within the next week,” says Dr. Centurion, highlighting possible dangers in a mini-stroke scenario.
How do you tell if such an emergency is happening and give the person the best chance of survival?
On VitalSigns, Dr. Alejandro outlines five telltale signs that a stroke is occurring.
