Black Mesa (formerly known as Black Mesa: Source) is the third full modification of Valve Corporation's Source game engine. The project's stated goal is to recreate the acclaimed 1998 game series Half-Life using the most advanced features of the Source engine. With a volunteer development team of more than 40 people, they hope to create a game with a more immersive environment, as well as a complex world with the most challenging gameplay and realism.

During its eight years of development, Black Mesa has been featured in various video game publications and received direct attention from Valve. Due to its long development time, the modification has become notable for its delays, and minimal updates on its status and completion. The delays led Wired magazine to award the title "Vaporware of the Year", lists for the years 2009 and 2010.

The first part of Black Mesa, made up of remakes of all Half-Life chapters except those set on the alien world "Xen", was released as a standalone download on September 14, 2012. A public vote via the Steam Greenlight program saw the game approved for distribution on Steam.
