Makhachkala is the capital and largest city of Dagestan, Russia. The city is located on the Caspian Sea, with a population of roughly 1 million residents.
Makhachkala is the fourth-largest city in the Caucasus, the largest city in the North Caucasus and the North Caucasian Federal District, as well as the third-largest city on the Caspian Sea. The city is extremely ethnically diverse, with a minor ethnic Russian population.
The city was named Petrovskoye after Peter the Great. After gaining city status in 1857, the Petrovskoye fortress was renamed Petrovsk-Port. After the Russian Revolution, Petrovsk-Port was renamed Makhachkala on May 14, 1921.
Makhachkala is an important economic, educational, scientific, and cultural centre of the North Caucasus. The city is a major Russian seaport on the Caspian Sea, and a transport hub. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Russia.
One of Dagestan's most priceless historical sites is the Yusuf Bey Mosque. This mosque, which was modeled after Istanbul's Blue Mosque, showcases the splendor of Islamic culture. Additionally, the mosque and the surrounding Islamic complex are very respectable in the eyes of the locals. You are both welcome to enter and pray inside the Yusuf Bey mosque.
Another significant city in the Republic of Dagestan is Derbent. Additionally, this city is situated along the Caspian Sea coast. You can see the well-known Dzhuma Mosque here. One of the best examples of Islamic architecture in the Caucasus is the mosque.
Derbent claims to be the oldest city in Russia, with historical documentation dating to the 8th century BC, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Naryn-Kala is an ancient pre-Arab citadel, part of the Derbent fortress.
In general, the climate is frequently warm and humid. Mountainous rural areas can have harsh weather conditions, though. In general, you will experience "mild" weather throughout the entire nation of Dagestan, which is not particularly hot. Mountains, though, might be covered in snow. As a result, spring or the hot summer months are good times to visit Dagestan.
The best time to visit and travel to this area may be from the middle of May to the month of September. During their trip, visitors can take a dip in the Caspian Sea and bask in the warm Caucasus sun.
