Hydration… a constant issue in the back country and something that cannot be pushed aside. I naturally sweat pretty profusely, so I have to make sure that I constantly have water. While hiking through the back country in Utah, there were times where we spent three or four hours hiking just to find water. 1 gallon of water, about 4 liters, weighs like 8 pounds. But it’s definitely worth it to carry extra. With the amount of physical exertion, we were putting forward, and as dry as the climate was, it was worth the weight to carry more water with us. This video is right after about a three hour hike just to find clean water to filter and fill up our bags. Always make sure to get clean running water from streams and not stagnant source when possible. You can drink filtered stagnant water, but it’s a great idea to add some iodine tabs to the water to make sure you kill any harmful bacteria. Getting diarrhea from a bad bacteria in your gut will only further dehydrate you, but Running out of water can lead to very serious consequences like kidney stones, exhaustion, stroke, and even put you in the hospital if you’re not careful.
