Relations with Poland, which has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war, have reached a breaking point in recent days over a grain trade dispute. Poland has been an important ally since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, supplying arms to Ukraine and hosting refugees.
Recent developments, however, have strained relations between the two countries over disagreements over Ukrainian grain. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that his country had decided to prioritize its own defense and halted arms deliveries to Ukraine.
Military equipment sent to Ukraine so far included tanks, rocket launchers, missile systems, artillery and air defense systems, UAVs and helmets. Poland's move, however, came as a reaction to an EU decision affecting the trade in Ukrainian grain, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized in his speech at the UN General Assembly.
However, on September 15, the EU Commission announced an end to the import ban, arguing that "market distortions in the five member states bordering Ukraine have been eliminated." Poland, Hungary and Slovakia announced that they would oppose this decision.
In addition, Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki made the following statements yesterday:
"I warn the Ukrainian authorities that if they escalate the conflict in this way, we will add more products to the import ban on Polish territory."
