WEX Wakeup: Abbott doubles down on Texas border barrier; Lake re-ups fight against Maricopa County

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) has answered President Joe Biden’s attempt to take down razor wire placed by Texas to deter immigrants illegally crossing over the border. Abbott said the razor wire Texas placed along the southern border “denies access to the state of Texas from the river, from the border.” The governor said that Biden ordered Border Patrol agents to cut and pull the wire, allowing immigrants through.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre got into a verbal fight with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy on Thursday when asked a question on illegal immigration. Doocy had asked Jean-Pierre what the White House called 10,000 people illegally crossing the border "in a single day" during Thursday's press briefing at the White House. Jean-Pierre began to respond to Doocy by asking, "What do you call it, Peter, when GOP puts forth a —" before she cut herself off, leading to her and Doocy getting into an argument.

Former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake was in court Thursday to support an argument that ballot signatures are public record and ought to be reviewed. Thursday's appearance in court was Lake's latest legal maneuver since Yavapai County Superior Court Judge John Napper ruled that the signatures of mail-in ballots had not gone through the proper verification process, per Arizona law. Lake said in a statement afterward that the failed verification "has allowed for the integrity of our elections to be washed away."
