Sound on! This golden-mantled ground squirrel (Callospermophilus lateralis) is letting you know to watch out, a predator may be nearby! When alarmed, ground squirrels stand on their hind feet, improving their ability to see and hear, and let out loud chirps or squeaks. Have you heard this call while out hiking in Mount Rainier National Park?

NPS Video, filmed 8/9/21. Description: A squirrel stands on its hind feet on top of a rock, facing away from the camera, periodically emitting a single loud chirp. It has yellow-brown fur, darker brown down the back, a white stripe on each side, and a short fluffy tail.
