Waite Park Community Garden Tour

Come along with me as I take a tour of the Waite Park Community Garden in Minneapolis, MN. This garden is located at 3601 Lincoln Street in Minneapolis.

Started in 1997, the garden sits on land provided by the Soo Line/CPKC Railroad. The plots at 12’x12’, and the garden opens in May and runs through October (or so, just judging by their online calendar).

There is much more happening at this garden as there are events such as Garden Yoga and Solstice Gatherings. A Garden SHOULD be a place to gather and restore yourself. After all, you are surrounded be plants, pollinators and nature!

Reviewing their website (at https://waiteparkcommunitygarden.org), the Community Council has developed some solid rules and procedures for members. If you are trying to set up a community garden or have a community garden, you should check their rules and procedures out. Here is an example:

There are community work days, and gardeners are required to work at least 6 hours of work per plot. The work requirement applies to common areas, not individual plots. Garden Leads have assignments and projects, and these Garden Leads track who has worked, and who hasn’t.

In the past, I have walked through this community garden, but this year the gates had padlocks. The website has a passage about unauthorized people who have accessed the garden and taken produce and crops. It is unfortunate that this is a reality in today’s world.

As I always say: you can learn a lot from a garden. I will have more tours in the future, and my goal is to inspire you or give you some ideas about plants, growing techniques and decorating ideas for your garden.

Learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday!
