The Harp Seal, also known as the saddleback seal, is a marine mammal found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. They are known for their distinctive black harp-shaped markings on their backs. Unfortunately, they are also known for being one of the worst animal mothers in the wild.
Harp seal mothers only nurse their pups for about 12 days before abandoning them to fend for themselves on the ice. Many of these pups do not survive due to starvation, predation, or exposure to the harsh elements. Despite this, Harp Seals are still hunted for their fur and oil, which has caused their population to decline in recent years.
