In the Miyazaki Prefecture of Japan, gorgeous, plump, red, perfectly unscratched, and wonderfully sweet mangoes known as Taiyo no Tamago, or Egg of the Sun, are grown. The highest bidder receives the best mangoes each year, with the record set in 2019 at 500,000 yen for a pair, or roughly $4,000. There is no assurance that the mangoes will bring in such a high price, despite the fact that farmers in Miyazaki spend an entire year (or their entire lives? ) preparing them for auction. So why is it so tough to grow Taiyo no Tamago mangoes? And what accounts for their high cost?
