Christ's Supremacy and His role as the Redeemer of Humanity - Hebrews 2
In Hebrews 2:5-10, the author continues to emphasize the superiority of Jesus over the angels and delves into the significance of Christ's suffering and redemption:
[Hebrews 2:5-7 NKJV] 5 For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. 6 But one testified in a certain place, saying: "What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? 7 You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands.
Here, the author references Psalm 8, highlighting the fact that God has crowned humanity with glory and honor, giving them dominion over the works of His hands. However, the full realization of this dominion has not yet been seen.
The author draws a connection between Psalm 8 and Genesis 1, where God gave humanity dominion over the earth. Yet, due to Adam's disobedience, dominion was handed over to Satan. This demonstrates that Psalm 8 is prophetic because it foreshadows God's plan of redemption through Jesus.
[Hebrews 2:9 NKJV] 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
This verse emphasizes that Jesus, though initially made lower than the angels, was crowned with glory and honor through His suffering and death. His sacrifice was for the purpose of providing salvation for all.
[Hebrews 2:10 NKJV] 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom [are] all things and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
Here, the author explains that it was fitting for Jesus, the source and sustainer of all things, to undergo suffering in order to bring many to glory. Through His suffering, Jesus became the captain of our salvation and perfected the path to salvation.
These verses underscore the central theme of Christ's supremacy and His role as the redeemer of humanity. Through His suffering and sacrifice, Jesus fulfills the prophetic elements found in Psalm 8 and Genesis 1, bringing about the ultimate victory and redemption for believers. This victory is further elaborated upon in other passages you referenced, such as Romans 8, 1 Corinthians 15, and Revelation, highlighting the certainty of victory and the unbreakable love of God through Christ.
