Is Your Smart TV Watching You?

Smart TVs are often fitted with cameras and microphones, as well as internal memories, which can be used to monitor what we're doing, saying, and watching.

Smart TVs use automatic content recognition (ACR) technology to collect data about your viewing habits. ACR tracks everything you watch, including streaming services, regular TV shows, DVDs, and Blu-Rays. It can even track how long you spend watching TV, the channels you prefer, and the commercials you watch.

The FBI warns consumers to be extra vigilant with their smart TVs.

Smart TVs made by LG, Samsung, and Sony are gathering data from the TV itself, as well as from the operating system and apps. The devices you plug into your TV, such as Google's Chromecast, Apple TV, and Amazon's Fire Stick, can also be used to monitor what you're doing, saying, and watching.
