An Introduction to the book by Dr. James Davies "Sedated: How modern capitalism created our Mental Health crisis", published by Atlantic Books, London (2022). "In Britain alone, more than 20% of the adult population take a psychiatric drug in any one year: an increase of over 500% since 1980. Despite this prescription epidemic, levels of mental illness of all types have increased. Using interviews with experts and detaailed analysis, Dr. James Davies argues that this is because we have mischaracterized de problem. Rather than viewing most mental distress as an understandable reaction to wider societal problems, successive governments and big business have blamed suffererrs and their brains. Urgent and persuasive, "SEDATED" systematically debunks this individualistic view of mental illness and explains why it is so dangerous" (The Herald).
From the book's Introduction to the author: "James Davies is a reader in medical anthropology and mental health at the University of Roehampton, with a Ph.D in social and medical anthropology from the University of Oxford. He is a qualified psychotherapist (having previously worked in the National Health Service) and is the co-founder of the Council for Evidence-based Psychiatry (CEP), which is secretariat to the UK All Party Parliamentary group for Prescribed Drug Dependence. He has been an expert drug adviser for Public Health, England.
