Canada relations have hit rock bottom after Canada on Monday expelled a top Indian diplomat as it investigates what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called credible allegations that the Indian government may have had links to the assassination in Canada of a Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In Parliament, the Canadian PM said the country's intelligence agencies have been investigating the allegations after Nijjar was gunned down on June 18 outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia.

With the worsening relations, a big question loom over India-Canada trade relations as Canada ranks as the 18th most substantial overseas contributor to India's economy, funneling approximately $3.3 billion into the country from April 2000 to March 2023. This Canadian investment share constitutes roughly 0.5 percent of the cumulative influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) in India during this period. Furthermore, in 2022, India held the position of Canada's ninth-largest trade partner. Notably, services and infrastructure sectors jointly constituted a significant portion, accounting for 40.63 percent of the total FDI inflow from Canada into India.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the murder of an Indian separatist leader in the other country is ‘extremely serious’. The remarks came mere hours after the lawmaker asserted that "credible allegations" linked Indian agents to the June slaying of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi has however dismissed the Canadian government's accusations as ‘absurd’.
