I was getting fed up with having to change the batteries on my kitchen freezer monitor - it has a power hungry always-on radio connection to the two remote sensors - and needed a solution. This little device seems to be it.

This is a very basic power adaptor and what it does is replace the batteries in your device with a USB powered fakes This one is designed to replace two AAA batteries with a 3V supply but other versions are available for single, three and four battery devices.

In the bag, you receive the adapter with a USB-A plug on one end of the cable and a hard-wired AAA battery on the other. A separate dummy battery makes up the kit. Neither battery are actual batteries are shaped as they are to fit into the battery compartment and to complete the required circuit. Build quality is very lightweight and the set has a distinctly homemade look to it. The 200 cm twin core cable is very thin but then I suppose it would need to be to fit into the battery compartment. No instructions or paperwork is included but some basic information is printed on the rear of the USB plug.

Usage is simple and obvious. Just fit both dummy batteries as if they were normal ones, making sure the terminals align correctly and then connect the USB plug. That's all there is to it. The only problem is the cable protruding from the battery compartment of your device which may prevent the latch from closing. I have secured the battery compartment door on my device with a piece of tape.

Take care when buying one of these adapters - there are plenty of them out there - and be sure to select one with multiple good reviews. Some adapters do not output the correct voltage and may cause your connected device to burn out or malfunction.

I have used it for several weeks now and it is working fine.
This one cost me £13.32 but there are plenty of alternatives out there for less or more money.
