Lake District to North Pennines Coast to Coast Cycle Day 2: Greystoke to Alston via Penrith | C2C

Into the Pennines from the Lake District on our Coast to Coast (or C2C) cycle across the whole of England! Day 2: Greystoke-Alston - cycling out of the Lake District and into the North Pennines.

We got a bagel breakfast at our B&B in Greystoke and set off on a rather miserable day. We stopped in Penrith to pick up some snacks before heading on some more nice country roads. Soggy but happy, we carried on over the river and stopped by Long Meg & Her Daughters, the second biggest stone circle in the UK. Long Meg Stone Circle dates back to the Bronze Age (about 1500 BC) and consists of 59 stones and has a diameter of 106m. The tallest stone, Long Meg, stands at around four metres.We stopped for lunch in Melmerby and stocked up on calories before the big climb of the day up to Hartside Summit at an altitude of 1903 feet. It was a long, arduous climb, but worth it for the views and the downhill cycle to Alston, where we stayed in the the Youth Hostel for the night.

// Extra C2C info // Our route was from Whitehaven, on the west coast, to Sunderland, on the east coast. This is possibly the best C2C route, taking us through England’s Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. How long does it take to do the C2C cycle? Some people do it in a single day, whereas others take a week or more; we decided to do it over four days so we could take our time and enjoy the beauty of the areas we were cycling through!
