Wild Swimming & Hiking in Snowdonia Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Cadair Idris & Llyn Cau

We went wild swimming and hiking in Snowdonia in APRIL. High winds and super cold water made it a challenge but one we were very glad to have embarked on. Cadair Idris and Llyn Cau get a huge thumbs up from us.

We started our day in our beautiful cottage (Ty Isaf, just outside Welshpool in a village called Dolanog - link below) with views of horses, lambs and gorgeous Welsh countryside. After a coffee and some breakfast we said hello to the horses and drove 45 minutes to Dol Idris, the car park for Cadair Idris. On the way, two fighter jets passed overhead!

We paid £6 to park for the whole day and began the hike up. Most people do the circular route clockwise, but after some research, Hannah said it would be best to go anti-clockwise. We got warm whilst we were shielded from the wind by the trees but before long we were above the tree line and getting buffeted by really strong winds. We opted to cut a small amount from the route to give us some shelter from the wind and got our first views of the mountain lake we planned to swim in, Llyn Cau. We then rejoined our original route a little later.

The ridge to Cadair Idris was stunning and the views when we reached the trig point were absolutely phenomenal, with views of the sea, Barmouth, and beyond! After a short rest we carried on towards Craig Lwyd but stopped once more to have our lunch. From then on, it was a little further up and then down in yet more wind.

As we reached the glorious Llyn Cau the sun came out and Hannah was all for taking a dip, so we quickly got changed and jumped in. It was definitely a couple of "dips" rather than "swims" but hey, we went in!

From there it was about 45 minutes or so back to the car, where we were pleased to kick our boots off and get en route to a pub for a well-deserved pint and some pub grub. We finished the evening off back at Ty Isaf, where we fell asleep on the sofa by the fire!
