In 1983, Guy Bluford became the first African American astronaut in space, launching on the STS-8 mission from Kennedy Space Center. This historic mission included deploying a satellite, operating the Remote Manipulator System, conducting experiments, and marked the first night launch and night landing. Bluford and his crew completed 98 orbits in 145 hours before safely returning to Earth.
