Folks weren't that excited and thought it was silly, would be slow, waste time, few would use it, and it would be failed experiment.
Fast forward 30 years and the vast majority of customers use their Credit/Debt cards and a small minority uses cash. Keep this in mind when people claim Bitcoin could never be used for purchases for the same reasons.

We now have the Layer 2 Lightning Network and there is constant development going on to make Bitcoin faster, smoother, cheaper, and more versatile to use. In the last few years in my area alone I have seen dozens of businesses add "Bitcoin Accepted Here" stickers on their windows, and the local mall and most gas stations now have Bitcoin ATMs. All the "get cash for your spare change machines" now have an option to convert it to Bitcoin and send it to your wallet address. This was a pipe dream just 5 years ago. It will only grow.
