Why were Black Hawks called “Chalks” in Black Hawk Down?

Air Assault helicopters are split into "Chalks" "Serials and "Lifts.
"Chalks" are one helicopter.
"Serials are 4-5 helicopters."
"Lifts" are collections of serials that make one complete turn from the Pickup Zone to Landing Zone and back.
