Dear Pastor Bob: Some Christians say that if we have to take Scripture in context, then there isn’t much to apply to our lives. In other words, many Christians will quote various Bible passages that don’t have anything to do with their life situation, but they make the application anyway. Is this a wise thing to do? There are several Scriptures that are descriptive, but not prescriptive. For example, we aren’t parting seas like Moses did, or rebuking storms like Jesus did. These would be descriptive texts. Some believers actually use these passages to teach that we drive away storms, such as hurricanes. And we can use a staff just like Moses did to do it. They say we can do this because God gives us dominion over the earth as outlined in Genesis. Having said all that, how do we know which Scriptures to apply to our lives? Do you have any thoughts on this?
