Date – Monday, September 18th, 2023 – St. Joseph of Cupertino

1. **Birth and Childhood Suffering:** St. Joseph of Cupertino was born on June 17, 1603, into a poor family. He had a sickly childhood and faced significant suffering from an early age. At seven, he developed a gangrenous ulcer that was miraculously cured.

2. **Early Rejection and Lack of Human Value:** Throughout his early life, Joseph faced rejection and disdain from others due to his lack of natural abilities. His companions and even his own mother considered him to be of no human value.

3. **Entry into Religious Life:** Joseph entered the religious life, facing further difficulties due to his ineptitude and abstraction. He was often taken in ecstasy and could not perform basic tasks without making mistakes.

4. **Expulsion from the Monastery:** Eventually, the religious community expelled Joseph from the monastery due to his perceived uselessness. This expulsion caused him immense suffering.

5. **Providence and a New Beginning:** Joseph's life took a turn when an unknown religious gave him a habit. This gesture transformed his despair into hope and marked a new beginning.

6. **Ordination and Remarkable Exam:** Despite his limitations and lack of formal education, Joseph managed to pass an examination for the diaconate by successfully expounding on a single passage from Scripture.

7. **Priesthood Against the Odds:** A year later, Joseph faced another examination for the priesthood. The other candidates were well-prepared, while Joseph was not questioned at all. Nevertheless, he was approved for ordination.

8. **Loss of Spiritual Consolations:** During a period of his life, Joseph experienced a loss of the spiritual consolations he had enjoyed since childhood. This was a time of great anguish and spiritual dryness for him.

9. **Transformation and Miracles:** Joseph's life changed dramatically, and he became known for his ecstasies, miracles, and frequent levitations. He earned the nickname "the flying Friar" due to these supernatural experiences.

10. **Final Years in Osimo:** Joseph continued to experience supernatural manifestations and attract pilgrims until his death on September 18, 1663, in Osimo, Italy, at the age of 60.

What is the application for us? If we received gifts from nature or from God, let us admire St. Joseph of Cupertino in order to be detached from them and use them well. If we lack qualities or have to endure sufferings, let us admire him and follow his example of confidence in order to accomplish what God has planned for us.

St. Joseph of Cupertino, pray for us!
