Peacemakers are anything but nice to Oppressors. (Pt. 17 in the Series on Forgiveness)

Sadly, Survivors who’ve experienced willful and intentional abuse at the hands of perpetrators, and those who’ve been on the receiving end of harm by calculating oppressors, have commonly been told by counselors and clergy alike, that “Blessed are the peacemakers” means to “forgive and forget”, regardless of whether the perpetrator or oppressor has ever confessed and genuinely repented. Such a misunderstanding and misapplication of that term simply add insult to injury, to the already wounded and hurting person. Is the term intended to convey the idea of simply dropping the matter, for the sake of “making nice” and “keeping the peace.” Not at all. And, that is good news to those who’ve been harmed by perpetrators and oppressors.

Uhler, LPC, looks at what Jesus meant in his first recorded public sermon, when He describes those would be blessed by God. This section of scripture has unfortunately been poorly understood in terms of the message of hope being to two groups of people closest to God's heart... those deeply wounded by oppressors, and those who answer the call to protect them. The message Jesus gave, and its meaning, is truly good news, as a peacemaker is anything but passive in the face of evil.
