Collier Trophy for 1962 to the original team of U.S. astronauts: Lieutenant Commander M. Scott Carpenter, Major L. Gordon Cooper, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr., Major Virgil I. Grissom, Commander Walter M. Schirra, Jr., Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr., and Major Donald K. Slayton. In his speech, President Kennedy discusses the international significance of Project Mercury.
