Dashcam shows suspect fleeing from Sandusky officer from a traffic stop for speeding
A Sandusky man was arrested late Wednesday after reportedly leading officers on a pursuit.
Dequavious L. House, 34, of the 1200 block of E. Perkins Ave., is facing charges of aggravated vehicular assault, vandalism, failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer and OVI, all of which are felonies. He is additionally charged with driving under OVI suspension, open container of alcohol and left of center, all of which are misdemeanors.
Just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, an officer was monitoring traffic in the 1900 block of Cleveland Road (U.S. 6) when he noticed a vehicle that appeared to be speeding, according to a Sandusky police report.
The officer followed the vehicle and reportedly saw the driver-side tires cross the center double yellow line.
A traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Cleveland Road and Sycamore Line. House pulled in to the parking lot of a business there.
The officer approached the driver and asked for his license and proof of insurance, the report states.
House reportedly patted his pockets, then grabbed the wheel and stepped on the gas pedal. The vehicle was in park, so all that happened was the engine revved, according to the report. He then allegedly put the vehicle in drive and fled from the traffic stop.
The vehicle traveled eastbound on Cleveland Road at a high rate of speed, according to the report. As he approached Remington Avenue, House reportedly attempted a right-hand turn, but due to the vehicle’s speed, the car crashed into a light pole.
House briefly put his hands out the window but then put the car in reverse and rammed the officer’s police cruiser before putting it back in drive and fleeing south over the railroad crossing, the report states.
When the officer drove over the tracks, he saw another vehicle that was flipped over. Another officer was able to detain House when his car became disabled due to the crash with the other vehicle.
Both House and the driver of the flipped over vehicle were transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries.
Officers inventoried House’s vehicle and reportedly found suspected marijuana and an open bottle of tequila.
House allegedly refused to provide a urine sample. Due to having three previous convictions for OVI, his misdemeanor OVI was elevated to a fourth-degree felony.
He is being held at Erie County Jail under a no-bond order. He had his bond from a May theft indictment revoked as a result of the new charges.
House's next court date is 9 a.m. on Friday in Sandusky Municipal Court, according to jail records.
