Moving abroad is NOT for everyone...
When thinking about moving abroad, it is undoubtedly quite important to think ahead, make a plan and do all of the research that you can before making the big move. Living in a foreign country can be challenging, especially when it comes to language barriers and cultural differences but having some knowledge on your side ahead of time can make things that much easier. That's why I always recommend trying to learn more than just basic phrases as well as local customs before you arrive at your destination. It can help you to feel more comfortable and confident in your new surroundings.
One thing to keep in mind is that not everyone shares the same cultural norms as what you might have grown up with, in your home country. So, it's important to approach your new host country with an open mind and a willingness to adapt. Flexibility is key! Understanding the "law of the land" can help you to better understand societal norms and expectations of a guest in the country. Simply respecting the immigration laws can make the biggest difference in your life. It's not a good idea to take advantage of the system or break any rules, as this can lead to greater restrictions on your travels and end up affecting other expats/immigrants when a government sees the abuse of their immigration system.
Now, let's talk about food! Trying new cuisines and restaurants is one of the best parts of living abroad. However, if you're a picky eater or not open to trying new things, it can be a bit challenging. My advice is to be adventurous and give authentic restaurants and cuisines a chance. You might be surprised by what you like, but if you find you don’t like the local cuisine, there’s nothing to be ashamed about either, different people like different things.
Lastly, I want to touch on the idea of remote work and living abroad long-term. With the rise of remote work opportunities, more and more people are considering this option. However, it's important to do your research and understand the logistics and financial considerations before committing to a new country. Make sure to research the cost of living, taxes, and visa requirements before making any big decisions.
For many people, living abroad can be a great experience, full of new opportunities and exciting adventures. But it's not for everyone, and for some people, staying in their home country is just simply the better choice, and there's nothing wrong with that. Each person has to do what is right for themself... Just remember, if you are moving abroad, or anywhere... plan ahead, be flexible, and approach your new home with an open mind and a willingness to learn and grow.
