In 2014 Russia Only Invaded Crimea Why Not All Of Ukraine Dr. Anatol Lieven (2/2)

When in 2014 "little green men" without any state identifying insignia appeared in Crimea it took only days for these fighters to take over all of the peninsula, without a single Russian or Ukrainian dying. Ukrainian soldiers laid down their weapons and went home. Why did Russia not exploit the obvious weakness of their neighbours back then and invade the whole country as finally happened in 2022? Why did Russia wait for 7 years? Dr. Anatol Lieven explains how Moscows strategic trust in Paris and Berlin, were pivotal for Russia to try to resolve Ukraine through Minsk, not Weapons.

Anatol's essay on Europe and Sarkozy's proposal: https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2023/08/31/sarkozy-vilified-for-speaking-uncomfortable-truths-about-ukraine/

Anatol Lieven is Director of the Eurasia Program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He was formerly a professor at Georgetown University in Qatar and in the War Studies Department of King’s College London.

Last week he published a wonderful article with the title “Sarkozy vilified for speaking uncomfortable truths about Ukraine” in which he argues that our beloved mass media is ignoring what Sarkozy said and instead just condemns him for saying the obvious.
