Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje (now in North Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje (now in North Macedonia), was a Catholic nun and missionary renowned for her unwavering dedication to serving the poorest of the poor in India and around the world.
At the age of 18, she left her home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, a Catholic religious congregation. She took the name Sister Mary Teresa and began her missionary work in India, where she taught at a school for girls in Calcutta (now Kolkata).
In 1946, while traveling by train to Darjeeling, Mother Teresa received what she described as a "call within a call" from God to serve the poorest and most marginalized members of society. This moment inspired her to establish the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation dedicated to caring for the sick, the homeless, and the dying.
Mother Teresa and her fellow sisters provided care and comfort to those who had been abandoned by society, establishing hospices, orphanages, and centers for the destitute and the dying. Their work expanded beyond India to other countries in need, and the Missionaries of Charity became a global organization.
Mother Teresa's humility, compassion, and selflessness earned her widespread admiration and respect. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her tireless efforts to alleviate suffering and promote peace. Her mission was not just about providing physical care, but also about recognizing the inherent dignity of every human being, regardless of their circumstances.
Despite facing criticism and challenges, Mother Teresa remained steadfast in her commitment to helping those in need. Her strong faith, acts of kindness, and dedication to "the poorest of the poor" left an indelible impact on the world. She passed away on September 5, 1997, but her legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire people of all faiths and backgrounds to make a difference in the lives of others. In 2016, Mother Teresa was canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in recognition of her extraordinary life and contributions to humanity.
