The French government announced on Thursday that a French official who was detained in Niger last week has been set free.

This detention had escalated tensions between France and Niger, particularly after military officers ousted an elected president in the country the previous month and demanded that French officials depart.

The French Foreign Ministry, in a statement, disclosed that Stephane Jullien, who held the position of counselor for French citizens abroad, was released on Wednesday, five days after his initial arrest.

The statement did not provide specific information regarding the circumstances of his release or the grounds for his arrest. The French government had strongly advocated for his release, Fox News reported.
