YOU CAN NOT BE LOST UNLESS YOU BELONG

Suppose I lost my pocket knife and was desperate to find it again. I know I had it last night when I took it out of my pocket and placed it on my nightstand. So I immediately marched to my neighbor's house and pounded on his door, demanding that he let me search his house for my pocket knife.
What would you expect my neighbor's response to be?
He may say something like; Hey, neighbor, all the pocket knives in this house belong to me; search in your place where you lost it.
You didn't lose your neighbor's pocket knife because it didn't belong to you; you lost the ones you owned.
The parable Jesus gave us in Luke 15 tells the exact story of the lost pocket knife. You can only lose something if it belongs to you.
Jesus refers to the sinner in Luke 15 as the lost sheep, the coin, and the son.
They were all lost, misplaced, or out of their position of inheritance.
The story is the same with each one: even though they were lost, they still belonged to the one that owned them.
The shepherd still claimed ownership of the sheep that had been lost. That's why he searched for his lost sheep so diligently.
The coin that had been misplaced in the house still belonged to the mistress of the house. That's why she scoured the house, looking for it until they found it.
Likewise, the story of the prodigal son is one of our most well-known parables. The son who left his Father's home and ended up feeding the pigs never lost his sonship. He still belongs to the family.
So, just briefly, compare that to our general thoughts towards sinners and people outside church life. Most of our theology only claims them as sons once they come through our theological gateway to salvation. It's only when they have met with our approval as bona fide Christians that the writings and revelations that Paul had in his gospel apply to them.
As we look at the world around us and the nations of the world, I would suggest that we see them as sons of God who need to come home to the Father. That would guide our intercession in a laser direction so that we may hit the target.
