The families of victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 gathered across New York City, Virginia and Pennsylvania on Monday to honour their loved ones and the nearly 3,000 other lives lost that tragic day, 22 years ago.

“This day is still significant in my life. I have not become complacent in knowing that this tragedy has caused a lot of pain, not only to me and my family, but to others who have experienced this horrible, horrible thing,” said Debra Epps, a woman who lost her brother during the 9/11 attacks.

U.S. officials, too, honoured the fallen. U.S. Secretary of State Lloyd Austin said that "I know that it aches to remember this milestone year after year," adding that "we will always strive to be worthy of the memory of those we lost."

Rev. Phillip Jackson, the rector from New York City’s Trinity Church on Wall Street, led a prayer service and rang the Bell of Hope, as per tradition.
