After a two-day delay brought forward by technical issues on a government aircraft, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has departed India and is heading back to Canada.

Trudeau and the Canadian delegation that had attended the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi, India was set to depart for Ottawa on Sunday, but the plane was grounded over an issue discovered during pre-flight checks.

The broken down 40-year-old airbus, with a host of known mechanical issues, was grounded on Sunday evening due to a problem with one of its components, government officials said.

This year’s G20 summit was chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Over the last few years, Canada and India have shared a tense political relationship — making for an awkward visit given Trudeau’s extended delay.

The Canadian delegation is now set to arrive back in Canada on Tuesday — when the three-day Liberal caucus is set to begin in London, Ont. Global’s Touria Izri has the latest.
