Islam is one of the world's major monotheistic religions, founded in the 7th century CE in the Arabian Peninsula by the Prophet Muhammad. It is based on the teachings of the Quran, Islam's holy scripture, which Muslims believe to be the word of God as revealed to Muhammad. The core beliefs of Islam include the belief in one God (Allah in Arabic), the importance of prayer, charity (zakat), fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, and the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca (Hajj) for those who are able.

Islam is also characterized by the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the fundamental acts of worship and practice for Muslims. These pillars are:

Shahada: The declaration of faith, bearing witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His prophet.

Salat: The practice of ritual prayer five times a day facing the Kaaba in Mecca.

Zakat: The obligation to give a portion of one's wealth to those in need, typically 2.5% of savings and investments.

Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan, from sunrise to sunset, as an act of self-purification and spiritual reflection.

Hajj: The pilgrimage to Mecca, mandatory for those who are physically and financially able to undertake it, at least once in their lifetime.
