The Spirit of Truth VS The Spirit of Error

What is the difference between mere error and the spirit of error? How can we discern the difference between error (a mistake) and the spirit of error (commitment to an error)? How important is truth? Should we always value unity over truth? What happens if we value unity over truth on important points of doctrine?
