The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni has met and held discussions with a delegation from Planet One Group, which is a global and diversified organization interested in investing in Uganda’s Education Sector.
The five-man team from Planet One Group, led by its founder and Chairman Sanjeev Mansotra, called on the First Lady at State House Nakasero and were accompanied by Andrew Mwenda; founder and Managing Director of the Independent Publications Limited.
During the meeting, Planet One Group’s delegation presented a detailed proposal of holistic education transformation that they would like to implement in Uganda.
They particularly desire to focus on Technical and Vocational Education Training and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Schools.
Their approach involves the organization mobilizing funds internationally, which it uses to support infrastructure development and transport, tools and equipment, curriculum alignment, content and courseware, teacher capacity building and training and technology solutions. Government is expected to pay back the funds over a period of 15 to 18 years at a low interest rate of about 1.5%.
Janet Museveni welcomed Planet One’s proposal saying it is something that the country needs. She said many TVET institutes across the country still lack hands-on trained personnel and what is urgently required is the training of the instructors and equipping of the institutes.
She however pointed out the need for the Ministry of Education to first conduct a technical assessment on the specific needs in the STEM and TVET fields and the cost implications of the scope and scale of the work that the Planet One Group could undertake to build, equip and skill.
