The earthquake struck just after 23:00 local time, and its impact was felt in various cities across Morocco.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.9 magnitude aftershock 19 minutes later.

The earthquake affected six provinces in the Atlas Mountains, located in the central part of Morocco, close to the city of Marrakesh.
