A man suspected of a homicide in Ohio and multiple carjackings in Kentucky met his demise in a confrontation with West Virginia police outside a gas station, where he had taken three individuals hostage.

The cross-state pursuit of David Maynard, aged 54, culminated late Saturday at a Speedway station in a West Virginia town situated along the Ohio River.

A vigilant sergeant, upon stopping at the station, recognized the individual behind the counter as the suspect who had eluded troopers thus far, as per a statement from the West Virginia State Police.

Maynard brandished his firearm at the sergeant, prompting the involvement of a State Police Special Response Team in coordination with local law enforcement.

According to the official statement, a negotiator successfully secured the release of two hostages before Maynard requested a blanket to be placed at the door for the third hostage, the Associated Press reported.
