Britain's Royal Air Force has deployed fighter jets to protect cargo ships carrying grain from Ukraine following recent Russian attacks on Ukraine's grain infrastructure. Accordingly, the British Ministry of Defense has taken this measure after Ukraine's grain infrastructure was targeted following Russia's suspension of the grain deal in July.
Officials say they have intensified intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to monitor Russia's activities in the Black Sea, and as part of this, RAF aircraft have been flying over the region to deter Russia from illegal attacks on civilian ships carrying grain.
This comes at a time when the UK government has highlighted the problems of food insecurity and malnutrition and decided to convene an international food security summit.
In the background, European Council President Charles Michel emphasized that blocking Ukraine's grain exports threatens the lives of some 250 million people in developing countries and called on Russia to end its blockade and bombardment of Ukrainian ports.
A few days ago, Vladimir Putin conditioned the grain deal on the lifting of sanctions, saying: "The West forced us to end the agreement. We claim that the Ukrainian side is using humanitarian corridors for terrorist attacks. Ukraine's share in world food exports is five percent, and this share will decrease even further. Sanctions on Russian products should be lifted. We are working to send 1 million tons of grain from Russia to Africa via Turkey, financed by Qatar."
