Hi, it’s Patrik Hutzel from intensivecarehotline.com with another quick tip for families in intensive care.
So this morning I was talking to a client and the client was telling or sharing the story of a 75-year old mother who was in intensive care last year in October, ended up with a tracheostomy. She couldn’t be weaned off the ventilator, ended up in LTAC, and now she’s been bouncing around between LTAC and ICU, simply because LTACs can’t manage ventilated patients with a tracheostomy.
I’ve been saying it for the last, nearly 10 years now and the phone call this morning from my client just confirmed what I’ve been saying for the longest. And then I asked the question, did she know when she consented to her mother for a tracheostomy? Did she know that her mother would most likely end up in LTAC?
And she said, no, she had no idea. The ICU team wasn’t educating her about it. And again, it goes, what I’ve been saying for the longest, that ICU teams are only telling you half of the story, unless you are asking the right questions, you’ll be fighting a losing battle.
